Reading and Writing

Reading

We passionately believe that teaching children to read and write independently as quickly as possible is one of the core purpose of our primary school. This develops children’s self-esteem and impacts on their ability to access the rest of the curriculum it also impacts on their future life chances.

We aim to develop children’s love of reading as soon as they arrive at St Patricks. We provide workshops for parents/carers to stress the importance of reading and writing and encourage them to read to their children as well as encouraging our children to read to their parents/carers. We provide practical materials and support on our website for parents/carers.

Early Reading – To develop their phonics skills children are taught to listen to the sounds in words, recognise individual letters and begin to blend these letters together in Reception. We teach phonics through Unlocking Letters and Sounds, which is a validated scheme. Our reading books match the Unlocking Letters and Sounds scheme. We have Information Evenings for Parents to help them support their child with Early Reading.

Developing Reading – Throughout the school, the children read creative and exciting stories linked to our wider curriculum. These are used to teach grammar and reading skills creatively.

Reading in KS2 - We teach reading in Ks2 through discreet reading lessons using high quality texts from the Ashley Booth reading scheme. We incorporate Reading VIPERS too into these lessons to help develop children's comprehension skills.

Writing

Writing

We aim to develop our children as writers as soon as they arrive at St Patrick’s. We offer workshops to parents to encourage them to value all writing as communication and show them how writing develops. We provide parents with packs of materials to help their child develop as a writer.

We encourage our children to rehearse and develop their sentences using talk partners and give them opportunities to write clearly and accurately across a range of genres.

Pathways to Write  Pathways to Write | Brookside Primary ...

We follow a Mastery approach to English through the programme ‘Pathways to Write.’ Units of work are delivered using high quality texts and children in all year groups are given varied opportunities for writing. Skills are built up through repetition within the units, and children apply these skills in the writing activities provided.  Many opportunities for widening children’s vocabulary are given through the Pathways to Write approach and this builds on the extensive work we do in school to provide our children with a rich and varied vocabulary.

You will find the end of year expectations for writing, reading and spoken language for each of our year groups in the attached documents. For further detail on the skills that your children are learning on a termly basis, please contact your class teacher.
